WHOIS Lookup

A WHOIS lookup is a public query protocol that returns registration and ownership information for a domain name or IP address block. To understand what is whois, think of it as the internet's public property registry: just as county property deeds reveal who owns a commercial building and which utility lines service it, a WHOIS query contacts regional internet registries (like ARIN or RIPE) to disclose which organization owns a block of network numbers.

In web scraping and cybersecurity, running a whois lookup ip check is the first line of defense for anti-bot systems. When an automated scraper initiates a connection, firewalls query WHOIS and BGP routing records to inspect the parent Autonomous System Number (ASN). If the registry indicates the address belongs to a cloud hosting company (such as AWS, DigitalOcean, or Hetzner), the firewall flags the connection as a commercial bot. While domain owners frequently buy whois privacy protection to hide personal contact details, IP subnets cannot conceal their corporate infrastructure owners.

Data teams running a free whois lookup audit their proxy pools to ensure their traffic actually appears as genuine consumer broadband rather than datacenter servers. Routing traffic through datacenter ranges triggers instant CAPTCHAs, whereas residential ranges pass inspection undetected. MrScraper Residential Proxies resolve this problem at the root by sourcing IPs registered directly to legitimate consumer ISPs in WHOIS records, giving your requests the highest baseline trust.
